Recreation
In days gone by, the labour intensive methods of work limited the amount of recreational time available to parishioners. Nonetheless, people did find the time to enjoy themselves through a variety of activities. Sport would have been enjoyed by many people whilst the highlight for many was a trip to the races or an All-Ireland final. Pastimes like pitch and toss and "25" card games were ppular as were social outings whenever there was transport available. Music sessions were popular too with the Turloughmore Carnival providing plenty of entertainment for a few weeks every year.
There were a number of permanent dance halls in the parish including Carolls dance hall in Cregmore, Murphy's dance hall in Ballinvoher and "The Lisheen Town Hall" in Lisheenavalla. Young people from the parish and indeed outside the parish walked and cycled many miles to the dances held in these halls. Alcohol was not allowed, yet people still enjoyed themselves.
A song was composed about the "Lisheen Town Hall" which was located at Lisheen Crossroads.
At the Lisheen crossroads, there lies a fine hall,
where the swanks of the country do often times call.
Beautiful lassies that lie around there
Carnmore, Baile an Turluaigh and famous Caherlea.
Also Barraig, Baile an Turlaigh and Cregmore,
Grange and Coshla, Cashelampert and more,
they all step together the same as roll call,
They enjoy a few hours in the Lisheen Town Hall.
Tonroe, Bail na Creige, Gortacleva and Kiltrogue,
Down to Cinn Uisce, we'll give it a strole,
To see the fag smokers comin' down with the fall,
They're expectin' the feanins to be ouside the hall.
Corbally an' all around it I'm not able to name,
The Monards an' Turloughs, they'd make you ashamed.
If you look on their faces, theyr'e as pious as St. Paul,
They'd enjoy a good click in the Lisheen Town Hall.
There's a village close by, now it's Lisheen I mean,
I've nothing to say but thery're a gallant old team,
Whitewashin' an' pasterin' an' thatchin' an' all,
They all gave their hours in the Lisheen Town Hall.
