About us

Our Museum and Heritage Centre is situated twelve miles NE of Galway city on the R353, in Lackagh village beside the church. We work to conserve our local heritage, foster an appreciation of it, facilitate public access to it and provide facilities for the benefit of our community.
Our Association was formed in 1994 to help restore and maintain a derelict cottage, the former home of the Carrick family, adjacent to the church. The building was a central part of the village and had once served as a shop. The vision behind the restoration was to develop it into a museum of social history to ensure a link with the past for the present and future generations.
The building was slightly modified and restored with an original thatch roof. Two out houses behind the building were also restored. Members of the local community donated the artefacts that are housed in the Museum & outhouses. The objective of this restoration was to promote an interest and pride in local heritage and community development. This continues to be done by the present committee.
The restoration was achieved with financial help from the local community mainly through supporting the weekly Lotto and grants from various public bodies among them Galway County Council, Galway VEC and Galway Rural Development.
The complex now comprises of five different buildings that are used for educational and community purposes throughout the year. This includes the recently constructed Parish Centre. The GRETB run courses during the Autumn & Spring, which help old and young develop their talents. The committee also offers courses in computers, arts and crafts whilst he yoga and fitness courses are privately run.
We are greatly assisted by our FÁS and Tus employees in the upkeep of our facility and ongoing conservation work.
Visitors to the museum can view a selection of antique household items along with a number of horse drawn farm machines and farm implements. We are open Monday to Friday, 10am-1pm and by appointment. We look forward to seeing you
